Yesterday was National Donut Day, and while we did not have donuts (we had bagels), we eat them often enough. Sometimes, I even make them! Like with these Apple Cider Donuts!
Last month we took the boys up north to go apple picking. Yes, they do do that here in Arizona, too. Actually, they have a super cute orchard about 3 hours away that we went to before we had kids, and then we took Koa when he was about 2.
Fun story there…
Because it was 3 hours away we decided to make a weekend of it and stay overnight and enjoy the orchard and the area. Well, when we got all the way there and pulled into our hotel, we were unpacking the car when I asked where Koa’s suitcase was. Packing the car was my husbands job. Koa’s suitcase, with his clothes and diapers and wipes…all left at home. Best part was, we were in a tiny little town with just a Safeway, which closed at 11pm. So here we were at 10.30, when my husband made a mad rush into the Safeway to buy diapers and wipes. We made do, found a random little store the next morning to grab Koa some jeans and we went apple picking. Made for a great story too, and J never forgot the diapers again.
Well, we decided against the 3 hour drive this time, and instead headed up north about an hour to what we thought was a cute orchard. We got all the way up there and after walking around for a while wondering where all the dang apples were we finally asked someone. Turns out this year they weren’t doing apple picking! Something about power lines and helicopters. I still don’t know what that has to do with picking apples…
You could however, buy a bag of apples that the rangers picked off the trees. So, we did that and then just hung out to take some pictures. So, not exactly the apple picking adventure I had envisioned, but it was an adventure of sorts.
After we got home, without apples, I went to the store and bought some, and some cider, and made these donuts!
For reals, these did not last long in the house. Kai got all jump-up-and-down-excited when I gave him one, Koa could have eaten the glaze with a spoon if I let him and my hubby? Well, he had no words. These donuts are the perfect mix of everything Fall. Apple with just the right amount of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and cider flavor.
These donuts are baked, not fried, and easy to whip up quickly. I used a donut pan to bake these. You can enter to win one at the end of this post!
